Touring the Vines to and from Richmond

 The Vines Have It!

Pressing Matters vineyard on the 5th of May, 2021

Yesterday I had the pleasure and privilege to experience a great ride in southeast Tasmania on a gorgeous autumn day. A significant experience along the way was the number of vineyards and wineries I pedalled past, so I thought it would be good to share this with a wider audience.

The map below shows the route I took and vineyards and wineries I rode directly past. (Note that there are many, many more vineyards and wineries quite close by the route I took and that I've only indicated those I passed directly beside.)

Vineyards and wineries along yesterday's route

Anyone who is thinking about a visit to Hobart sometime down the track might like to know about some of the wineries along the way that are worth visiting so here's a list:

  • Moorilla - on Main Road in Berriedale, just 12 kms north of Hobart's CBD, which is also the site of the world famous MONA
  • Pooley's Wines - just southeast of Richmond, heading towards Hobart
  • Every Man and His Dog - along Richmond Rd just past the junction with Grasstree Hill Rd heading towards Hobart
  • Puddleduck Vineyard - a bit further along the road to Cambridge
  • Frogmore Creek - just past Cambridge on the way to Richmond from Hobart (or the airport)
  • Craigow Vineyard - a little further up the road towards Richmond along Richmond Rd

All the wineries I've listed above have great cellar doors and are in lovely settings. There are plenty more scattered around the district but I just wanted to highlight the burgeoning nature of the boutique wine industry close to Hobart and wine producing establishments I randomly passed by on my ride yesterday. If you're a mainlander or an New Zealander you can now visit anytime and our cycling is good year round. Even in winter there rarely passes a period of more than 48 hours when it's not enjoyable to be out on the bike, and the Coal River Valley region is significantly drier than Hobart itself. For readers scattered elsewhere around the globe, you'll just have to wait a little longer to enjoy the delights of combining cycling and winery visits in southern Tasmania.
